SWP calculator: how long will your corpus last?

A systematic withdrawal plan (SWP) takes a fixed amount out of an investment every month while the rest stays invested and keeps earning. Enter your corpus, the monthly withdrawal and an expected return, and this calculator shows how long the money lasts and how much you withdraw in total.

Each month the remaining balance earns the monthly rate, then the withdrawal is taken out. If the withdrawal is no larger than the monthly growth, the corpus can last indefinitely (the tool reports 50+ years as sustainable); if it is larger, the balance shrinks until it runs out. A higher withdrawal or a lower return shortens the life of the money quickly, so test a cautious return before relying on the plan for income.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sustainable withdrawal amount?

It is roughly the amount the corpus can earn without shrinking. Withdrawing more than that draws down your capital, which is not always wrong, but shortens how long it lasts.

Is the withdrawal taxable?

Each withdrawal contains some capital and some gains, and the gains can be taxed depending on the investment and holding period. Check the rules that apply to yours.

How is this different from the retirement corpus calculator?

The retirement tool estimates how much you need to build. This one starts with a corpus and shows how long it can fund your withdrawals.
