Goal-based SIP calculator: how much to invest each month
If you know what you need and when, this calculator works backwards. Enter the target amount, the number of years and an expected return, and it shows the monthly SIP required to get there.
It rearranges the SIP future-value formula: the required instalment equals the target divided by the growth factor of a monthly series of payments over your period. A longer timeline or a higher assumed return lowers the monthly amount, but the return is a guess, so check the result against a more cautious rate too. Setting aside a little extra is safer than aiming for exactly the target.
Frequently asked questions
What if the monthly amount is too high?
You can lengthen the timeline, lower the target, or start with a smaller SIP and raise it each year with the step-up SIP calculator.
Should I count inflation in the target?
For goals far in the future, yes. Prices rise over time, so a target set in today's rupees will cost more later. Increase the target to reflect that.
Is the result guaranteed?
No. It assumes a steady return, which market-linked investments do not provide year by year.
