PPF calculator: maturity value of the Public Provident Fund

The Public Provident Fund is a government-backed long-term savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. Enter your yearly contribution, the interest rate and the number of years, and this calculator shows the balance at the end and how much of it is interest.

The government sets the PPF rate and reviews it periodically, so the rate you enter is an assumption for the period. Interest is compounded annually, and there is an annual cap on how much can be deposited (₹1.5 lakh at the time of writing). The scheme has traditionally been tax-exempt on contribution, interest and maturity under the old regime; check the current rules before relying on that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw from a PPF before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed after a few years, subject to conditions, and the account can be extended in blocks after maturity. Full premature closure is allowed only in specific cases.

Is the PPF rate fixed for 15 years?

No. The rate can change when the government reviews it, which is why this tool treats the rate as an input you can adjust.

How does PPF compare with a bank FD?

PPF has a long lock-in and a government-set rate with tax benefits, while an FD has a chosen tenure and a bank rate that is taxable. They suit different goals.
