HRA exemption calculator: how much of your HRA is tax-free?

House rent allowance (HRA) is part of many salaries, and a portion of it can be exempt from tax if you pay rent. Enter your basic salary, HRA received, rent paid and city type, and this calculator shows the exempt amount and the taxable part.

The exemption is the lowest of three figures: the HRA you actually receive, the rent you pay minus 10% of your salary, and 50% of salary for metro cities or 40% for others, as the rule stands at the time of writing. Because it needs rent receipts and, for larger rent, the landlord's PAN, keep your documents ready. The exemption applies under the old tax regime.

Frequently asked questions

Which cities count as metro for HRA?

The higher 50% limit applies to a short list of metro cities specified in the rules, and others use 40%. The calculator asks which applies to you.

Can I claim HRA if I live with my parents?

Yes, if you actually pay rent to them and they report it as income, with proper proof. Without real rent payments, there is nothing to claim.

What if I have no HRA in my salary?

Then this exemption does not apply, but a separate deduction for rent paid may be available in certain cases under the old regime.
