What it is
A salary slip or payslip is a formal document issued every month by an employer to their employees. It breaks down your total salary into various components like basic pay, allowances, and deductions such as provident fund (PF) and taxes. For banks and NBFCs, it acts as the primary proof of your monthly income and employment stability. You will need your most recent salary slips when applying for personal loans, home loans, or credit cards.

Good to know
Basic salary usually makes up 40% to 50% of your total pay.
Gross salary is what you earn before deductions; Net salary (in-hand) is what hits your bank account.
Banks only care about your Net salary when calculating loan EMIs.
Your salary slip shows your leave balance and LOP (Loss of Pay) days.
Banks check LOP days to see if you have erratic attendance or unstable income.
The Provident Fund (PF) deducted is usually 12% of your Basic pay.
Having your PAN and UAN printed on the slip speeds up loan approvals.
Forged salary slips are a criminal offence and lead to immediate blacklisting by CIBIL.
Perks like meal coupons or reimbursements might not be counted as regular income by lenders.
Many modern HR portals allow you to download slips for the past 5 to 10 years.
Mistakes that get applications rejected
Submitting slips older than 3 months => always provide the 3 most recent consecutive months
Net salary does not match bank statement deposit => ensure you provide the bank statement of the exact account where salary is credited
Unsigned physical slips => if your company gives printed slips, make sure they have the company stamp and HR signature
Password-protected PDFs => remove the password or share the exact password with the bank when uploading the PDF
Submitting a salary certificate instead of a slip => a certificate lacks the deduction breakdown which banks need, always give the detailed slip
Submitting blurry screenshots => always download the original PDF from your HR portal for clear readability
Hiding the deductions section => banks must see your PF and tax deductions, do not crop the document
Keep it safe
Never share your salary slip with unauthorized loan apps or unverified agents on WhatsApp.
Password protect the PDF before emailing it to third parties.
Redact or hide your UAN if sharing the slip for non-banking purposes like renting.
Do not inflate or edit numbers using PDF editors; banks catch this easily and will report you for fraud.
Always check if the TDS deducted on your slip actually reflects in your Form 26AS on the Income Tax portal.
Check that the EPF deductions match the passbook on the official EPFO portal.
Keep backup copies of your salary slips in DigiLocker or Google Drive in case you change jobs and lose HR portal access.
