What it is
The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a 10-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department to track financial transactions. It is mandatory for filing income tax returns, opening any bank or demat account, and conducting transactions above ₹50,000. Almost every financial institution in India requires your PAN to ensure tax compliance and prevent tax evasion. While primarily a tax document, it is widely accepted as a valid proof of identity.

Linking rules
PAN-Aadhaar linking
Mandatory for all eligible Indian citizens; failing to link makes the PAN inoperative (you cannot file taxes, and higher TDS/TCS will apply); penalty to link after the deadline is ₹1,000Bank account linking
mandatory to link PAN to all bank accounts to avoid TDS deductions at a higher rate (usually 20%)
For NRIs
NRIs must apply using Form 49AA
Cannot use Aadhaar for e-KYC; must provide a copy of passport and overseas address proof
Can pay the higher fee (₹1,017) to have the physical card shipped to their foreign address
PAN is mandatory for NRIs to invest in Indian mutual funds, buy property, or open an NRO/NRE account
For children
Minors cannot apply themselves; a parent or guardian must act as the 'Representative Assessee'
The minor's PAN card will not have their photo or signature (it says 'Minor' instead)
It can be used for opening bank accounts or making investments in the child's name
When the minor turns 18, they must apply for an 'Update/Correction' to add their own photo and signature and remove the guardian's details
Good to know
Holding more than one PAN is illegal in India and attracts a penalty of ₹10,000 under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act
Your PAN never changes, even if you change your name, address, or state of residence
You do not need to be 18 to get a PAN; even infants can have one
The physical card is not strictly necessary for e-filing taxes; knowing the 10-digit number is enough
A PAN card does not prove your Indian citizenship, as foreign nationals can also hold one
If your PAN becomes inoperative due to not linking with Aadhaar, your mutual fund SIPs and stock market trades will be blocked
Mistakes that get applications rejected
Name mismatch with Aadhaar => ensure your name on the PAN application perfectly matches your Aadhaar, or e-KYC will fail instantly
Applying for a second PAN when the first is lost => this is illegal; you must apply for a 'Reprint' or 'Correction', not a 'New PAN'
Using Instant e-PAN for complex bank loans => instant e-PANs lack your signature, which some banks reject; fix this by applying for a signature update online
Ignoring the Aadhaar linking deadline => makes the PAN inoperative, leading to failed KYC and 20% TDS on fixed deposits; fix by paying ₹1,000 on the e-Filing portal to link them
Sending documents to the wrong address => if applying offline, ensure you mail documents to Protean or UTIITSL exactly as instructed on the acknowledgement receipt
Keep it safe
Always write 'Submitted for [Purpose] on [Date]' across photocopies of your PAN card before giving them to anyone
Never share your PAN details on unverified loan apps, as they can misuse it to check your credit score or open bogus loans
Check your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS regularly on the Income Tax portal to ensure no one is misusing your PAN for high-value transactions
Do not post photos of your PAN card on social media or send them via unencrypted messaging groups
Only download the e-PAN from the official Income Tax, Protean, UTIITSL portals or DigiLocker
Questions people ask
Can I hold two PAN cards?
No, holding more than one PAN is a legal offence with a ₹10,000 penalty. Surrender the duplicate one immediately.
Is a physical PAN card mandatory?
No, an e-PAN holds the exact same legal validity and can be printed or shown digitally.
What happens if I do not link my PAN with Aadhaar?
Your PAN becomes inoperative. You cannot open bank accounts, buy mutual funds, or file taxes, and TDS will be deducted at a flat 20%.
How long does it take to get a PAN card?
An instant e-PAN takes 10 minutes. A regular application takes 3 to 7 days online, and physical delivery takes about two weeks.
Does a PAN card expire?
No, your PAN is valid for your entire lifetime.
Can a student or person with no income apply for a PAN?
Yes, anyone can apply for a PAN regardless of their income level. It is widely used just as an identity proof.
My instant e-PAN does not have my signature. Is that a problem?
Some banks may ask for a signed PAN for loans or credit cards. You can easily fix this by applying for a PAN update online to upload your physical signature.
How do I change my name on my PAN after marriage?
Apply for a 'PAN Correction' online and upload your marriage certificate or a gazette notification as proof.
